Currently hooked on this book, Plain Truth, by Jodi Picoult. I have wanted to read her books for a while and managed to read My Sister’s Keeper two months ago. After a series of chicklit, reading Jodi Picoult’s books is a refreshing change. You can caterogise her book as “serious fiction”. Took advantage of the Borders 40% discount coupon a couple of weeks ago and bought Plain Truth.
I could not put this book down. I am only at Chapter 4 and the suspence is killing me. I really enjoy reading this book into the Amish world. I have always been fancinated by the Amish people, how they live and their beliefs. This book has given me some insights to their way of life.
Did you know that if an Amish woman married a non-Amish man, she is put under the bann – restricted from certain social contact with people who are still Amish. She could talk to Amish friends and family, but couldn’t eat at the same table with them. She could sit beside them on the bus, but not offer them a ride in her car. She could buy from them, but needed a third party to transact the sale.
